How to Enjoy a Road Trip with Children

If you’re planning a trip with children, then it’s important that you make it as easy and enjoyable as possible for everyone involved. Long car journeys with children can be hard work, but by following some of our top tips you’ll be able to make it a more enjoyable experience for you all.

Organization and Safety

Before you set off, it is always a great idea to get your car checked over. You can get a safety check from most garages across the country, so pop in and get a mechanic to look at your car before you set off. The last thing you need on a long road trip is for your car to break down. Another great idea is to check that you’ve got breakdown cover in place, just in case you’re involved in a crash or you break down. Keep some high-vis vests, blankets, water, and a full first aid kit in your boot, just in case the worst happens, and you’re stranded.

Another important safety tip is to make sure that your children have car seats that are appropriate for their weight, height, and age. A child’s car seat can protect them in a crash, so they are very important. If you are unsure of the rules around car seats in your state then check out your state’s guidelines here.

Organization is key when traveling long distances with children. A great idea would be to make a map of possible toilet stops along the route you are traveling. This can come in very useful when traveling with young children. If you’re worried they won’t make it between the stops, then you could consider taking a potty along with you just in case.

Keeping the Kids Entertained

Keeping the kids entertained on a long journey may seem daunting. You could play an audiobook in the car or provide them with a busy pack. A busy pack is a pack that can be designed around your child. You fill it with items that they will enjoy such as paper, pens, toy cars or magnets. Busy packs are a great way of keeping your children busy and quiet in the car. You could also make a tally chart before you set off and encourage your children to mark off when they spot something on the chart, for example, an airplane or a red car.

Avoid Hunger Tantrums

Keeping your kids entertained is one thing, but making sure that they’re not hungry is another. Many children become grumpy when they start feeling hungry, which can make journeys a nightmare. To avoid tantrums, make sure you pack plenty of drinks and snacks. There are loads of snack ideas available that will stay fresh in your car. To make it extra comfy for your kids, why not invest in a pull-down table. Not only can they use it when they are eating their lunch, but they can also use it when they’re coloring or drawing.

Going on a long road trip with children can seem like an unnerving task. By keeping your kids entertained, safe, and full, you will find the trip a lot easier and less stressful.
