Finding out if you are pregnant or not can cause much excitement or anxiety in your household. For this life-changing situation, I know that I would want a definite “yes” or “no” in order to prepare for the new arrival.
So here is a list of homemade pregnancy tests that are easy to make. Better yet, the ingredients needed to assemble a homemade pregnancy test can be found right in your own home or at your favorite supermarket.

Here are a few recipes to choose from.

#1. The Toothpaste Method
This is one of the easiest homemade pregnancy tests that you will ever try. All you need is the following:
- A small disposable cup
- A sample from your first urination of the day. For more accurate results, you should use a urine sample from early in the morning right after getting out of bed. This first urine of the day tends to be the most concentrated because you have not ingested any water or coffee yet.
- A dropper that you will dispose of immediately
- A thick, disposal plate
- Some plain, white toothpaste
- Step 1: First thing in the morning, take the cup and obtain a urine sample. You will only need to fill the cup about halfway.
- Step 2: Squeeze a dollop of toothpaste about the size of a half dollar (about an inch in diameter) onto the plate.
- Step 3: With the dropper, siphon some of the urine; then drop it onto the toothpaste. Throw the dropper away immediately.
Within about five to ten minutes, the toothpaste will either turn blue or foam up if the result is positive. If there is no reaction, then likely, you are not pregnant.
However, keep in mind that with this test, a lack of a reaction does not guarantee a negative result due to the chemical contents of the toothpaste.

#2. The Soap Method
This method is very easy and requires very few ingredients. For this homemade pregnancy test, you will only need a disposable cup and plate, a plastic spoon, and a piece of soap. A dollop of liquid soap might also work.
- Step 1: Collect a sample right after getting up in the morning using the disposable cup. This one can be a small amount.
- Step 2: Place the soap on the disposable plate and then with the spoon, drop some of the urine directly on the soap.
- Step 3: Wait about five minutes. Bubbles and foaming will tell you that you are pregnant; otherwise, no reaction means that you are not.

#3. The BBT Method
This method is not commonly used to test for pregnancy but can help to verify results of other homemade tests. Most importantly, keeping track of your Basal Body Temperature provides insightful information about your ovulation patterns. This information can be quite useful to your gynecologist, especially if you suspect that you are having fertility issues.
There are some important factors to remember if you decide to record your BBT to determine when you’re most fertile and later on, to see if you are pregnant:
- Step 1: This method of determining pregnancy only works if you do not have any adverse health conditions, as they might affect the frequency of your menstrual cycles.
- Step 2: You will need to measure your BBT at the same time every morning before going to the restroom. A rectal thermometer is recommended for getting the most accurate measurement.
- Step 3: Reading and charting your BBT will help you to quickly detect any changes that occur in your cycles, which is important information to pass on to your practitioner if necessary.

#4. The Baking Soda Method
This is another easy and quick method. You will need a small urine sample taken early in the morning before ingesting water or anything else and a teaspoon of baking soda.
- Step 1: After collecting a small urine sample, drop the baking soda into the container.
- Step 2: You will need to watch carefully since the results will show right away. If the baking soda settles down into the sample, and there is no reaction, then you are pregnant. Any bubbling or sputtering means a negative result which might seem ironic, but those are the outcomes to look out for.

#5. The Dandelion Method
Who would have thought those pesky weeds in your front lawn would ever come in handy? Well, this method is probably as old as time itself, but it is simple to use. All you will need is a sterile disposable container and some dandelion leaves.
- Step 1: Carefully cut the leaves off of a dandelion plant. Place them in a plastic container and try not to expose them to direct sunlight, as this can affect the accuracy of the test and give a false result.
- Step 2: You will need to urinate on the leaves in the container. After a few minutes, if red spots appear on the leaves, then you are definitely expecting. Otherwise, you simply have one less dandelion to worry about in your garden.

#6. The Vinegar Method
Vinegar is another substance that you can easily find at the supermarket if you don’t already have a bottle in your cabinet. Plus, this test is quite easy because a rapid change in color should appear once you combine your sample with the vinegar.
At the same time, if you are sensitive to strong odors, you might want to open a window or turn a fan on a low setting just for ventilation. Although the smell is harmless, it is not the most pleasant sensory experience either.
- Step 1: You will need two disposable, plastic cups one for the vinegar and the other for the urine sample. First, you will need to measure and pour half a cup of vinegar into the first plastic container.
- Step 2: Next, you will need to obtain your urine sample.
- Step 3: Now pour the vinegar slowly into the container with the urine sample. If the color changes right away, then you have a positive result.

#7. The Bleach Method
For this test, you will need is some bleach, a handkerchief or protective mask, and small disposable plastic cups. (Paper or Styrofoam might not be sturdy enough.) You might also need some rubber gloves and paper towels, just in case.
You will need to follow these steps carefully because having enough ventilation or air flow around you is extremely important.
- Step 1: Obtain a morning sample of urine. You will only need to fill the cup about half way.
- Step 2: Fill the second cup half way with bleach. At this point, you might want to put on your rubber gloves and protective mask or place the handkerchief over your nose and mouth to protect against fumes.
- Step 3: Take both cups outside. The airflow is an added precaution. You will definitely need to cover your nose and mouth if you haven’t already. Pour the urine into the cup of bleach and step back for a moment to avoid fumes.
- This is another cautionary measure since your urine might contain ammonia, which should not be mixed with bleach.
- If the mixture starts to fizz and bubble after a few minutes, then you are pregnant! No reaction means a negative result.
So did you find this list informative and helpful? This information can help you to get started with the preparations for the new addition to your family. As always, I would also emphasize that if you feel any symptoms, you should contact your gynecologist as soon as possible to get the best care. And I welcome any comments you might have on the topic of homemade pregnancy tests.
