What causes dizziness in pregnancy and faintness during the third trimester? What are the Do’s and Don’ts?

The state of motherhood is one of the most important stages in a woman’s life. No matter how difficult it gets from the beginning and onwards, there is always this rewarding feeling upon seeing your child develop. Pregnancy is the jump-start of motherhood. The moment you find out that you conceived your darling angel, nothing else seems to matter besides your little bundle of joy.

However, there are sacrifices that you have to make. Changes in your body will occur, something that you are going to live through just for the safety of your baby above everything else. When I had my little girl, my body started to experience things it never has before. I started to crave things I did not want to eat, my emotions are all over the place, and my head was constantly spinning.

What to expect during pregnancy?

During pregnancy, you get to feel things that could make you uneasy. There are so many symptoms, which require not just your body but also your whole being to adjust such as mood swings, nausea, and cravings. Above all, probably the most prominent things you encounter is dizziness. You feel lightheaded most of the time, but that is something not to worry about.

These symptoms occur in the first until the twelfth week or the first trimester. However, dizziness will remain throughout the entire trimester. The second trimester is not as much as the first, but when dizziness becomes much harder to bear, it may come as a barreling back with faintness during the third trimester. Dizziness in pregnancy was something that I had a difficult time getting used to because I have to stop whatever I'm doing and sit whenever it comes.

As much as I do not like it, it is part of the journey of motherhood. Besides, it is only in the first few months. On the second trimester, things returned to normal, and I could again do the things I used to, with extra care. Upon approaching the last few months, my body felt weak as if I was about to faint.

Thank goodness, I did not. However, few mothers out there really did experience fainting during the third trimester. Hence, do not think that you are alone in facing this. As much as this sounds so worrying, this is actually a normal occurrence for pregnant women.

It does happen often, so rest assured that you are fine.

What causes dizziness and faintness?

A bit much of dizziness can actually lead to faintness. This is because, during pregnancy, your baby shares the same blood and nutrients. Below are causes of why you feel dizziness or even faintness.

  • Hormonal Changes

    The main reason you feel dizzy is the hormonal changes . Increase of hormones sends more blood from your system to your child. Your hemoglobin cannot catch up with the growth of blood especially if you lack iron. After all, your heart needs more blood to work and pump harder when supporting two lives.
  • Dehydration

    When pregnant, your tolerance from heat weakens. Being in a humid place will make you feel lightheaded. Dehydration is another way of nutrient deprivation. Besides that, heavy work and exercise will tire you out.

  • Body Positions

    Comfortability is necessary when you are pregnant. Other causes of dizziness may be because of abrupt standing after sitting or lying down. In doing so, your blood did not have enough time to reach your brain. You always find lying down on your back as the most comfortable sleeping position especially when approaching childbirth. 

    As much as it feels comfortable, laying on your back actually contributes to faintness because the weight of your baby is dependent on your spinal cord, back muscles, and large blood vessels. This causes back pain that usually triggers during the third trimester.

  • Lack of Food

    Lack of food means not getting enough nutrients. This leads to your sugar level going lower than usual. Your body has no other means of requiring both energy and nutrients. Since you are supporting two lives, you should double your daily dose of food and nutrients.  Eating three meals a day will be inadequate because there will also be a change in your metabolism.

What are the dos and don’ts in dizziness and faintness?

If you feel dizzy or faint, you can refer to the suggestions below for relief. Dizziness and faintness are regular during pregnancy, so it is always better to be aware.

  • When sitting or lying down, do not stand up right away. Give time for the blood to flow normally and reach your brain.
  • Place a pillow behind your calf or lower back when lying down to support your weight.
  • Light exercises are a great help when you are near the due date but avoid intense workout and strenuous activities.
  • Wear loose clothing for better blood circulation.
  • Stay in cool places.
  • Have a decent amount of sleep and rest.
  • Eat snacks in between meals and drink plenty of water.

When should I call my doctor?

The feeling of dizziness during pregnancy and faintness during the third trimester is normal. However, if you sense something wrong, never hesitate to call your doctor. In the third trimester, these conditions heighten because you are supporting the developing baby in your body. This is why others may experience faintness during the third trimester.

You must be very cautious not to lose a lot of energy. If you are constantly feeling like you are about to faint or if your dizziness comes with blood spots, pain in your womb, blurry eyesight, or rapid heartbeats, you need immediate medical attention.


Motherhood is never easy. There are certain things you have to endure for the baby. Pregnancy itself brings challenges in so many levels. We already worry when we feel ill in the absence of pregnancy, how much more when we are expecting?

Dizziness in pregnancy is not a joke. Faintness in pregnancy during the third trimester is the most critical one. Putting your baby’s safety is the top priority, but do not forget to take care of yourself. Whatever you feel, your baby does too.
